By in-licensing strategically important clinical stage drug candidates, we believe that we can add complementary technology and development programs to our existing pipeline.
Pharmaceutical companies constantly assess the commercial potential and strategic "fit" for their product candidates as they progress through the development cycle. Often in large companies, a drug candidate must offer the potential for $750 million per annum or more of revenue to justify further investment. A number of otherwise very promising candidates are abandoned by large pharmaceutical companies because they do not offer sufficient financial return to meet internal "hurdle" rates for those firms. We believe that in many cases, a drug we can readily develop and that offers the potential for hundreds of millions of dollars per year in revenues is very attractive. Our strategy is to opportunistically in-license such candidate compounds and complete their development and commercialization.
