Selodenoson - Acute and Chronic Control of Rapid Heart Rate
Atrial Fibrillation
Approximately 6 million people worldwide experience atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats at 2 - 3 times its normal rate. Atrial fibrillation impairs the heart's ability to effectively pump blood to the rest of the body and causes symptoms ranging from shortness of breath to heart failure and death.
The Aderis Approach
Although many treatments for atrial fibrillation are currently available, all cause significant side effects ranging from low blood pressure to a dangerously slow heart rate. There appears to be a significant need for drugs that control heart rate in atrial fibrillation.
Selodenoson is a potent and selective adenosine A1 agonist. This selectivity provides for more effective dosing with the potential to control heart rate without lowering blood pressure. Although additional adenosine A1 agonists are currently in development, we believe that our product is the only one that can effectively be formulated for IV administration to control heart rate during acute attacks, and for oral administration for the chronic management of atrial fibrillation.
Development & Commercialization
The IV formulation of Selodenoson is currently in Phase II clinical trials. Phase II results were reported at the 2002 AHA meeting. Results of an additional Phase II trial were presented at the 2003 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions. Aderis is also developing an oral formulation, which has completed a Phase I clinical trial.
In July 2004, Aderis Pharmaceuticals reacquired US & Canadian rights to the IV formulation of Selodenoson.
