Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the most common chronic conditions leading to lower extremity amputation. Chronic wounds afflict an estimated 8 to 12 million people worldwide including about 4 million in the US. Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the most difficult types of wounds to treat and they account for 10% of the total health care costs for treating diabetes in the United States.
