MRE-0094 - Topical Treatment for Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Diabetic Foot ulcers
Approximately 15% of the estimated 16 million diabetics in the United States will develop foot ulcers. Between 14 and 25% of these patients will, as a result of improper healing, require an amputation. It is estimated that of the more than 50,000 annual amputations of lower extremities in diabetics, 85% result from foot ulcers.

The Aderis Approach
Research has shown that stimulation of the various subtypes of adenosine receptors mediate different cellular and physiological actions associated with wound healing. Activation of the adenosine A2A receptors appears to shift the emphasis from inflammation toward healing in chronic wounds by regulating the response of inflammatory cells and mediators, promoting tissue formation through various mechanisms and promoting tissue remodeling. Aderis' novel molecule, MRE-0094, is an adenosine A2A agonist formulated as a topical treatment for chronic diabetic foot ulcers. MRE-0094 should offer significant cost and patient compliance advantages over alternatives such as proteins or artificial skin.

Development & Commercialization
Aderis has licensed worldwide development and commercialization of MRE-0094 to King R&D, a subsidiary of King Pharmaceuticals. King filed an IND in May 2002 for MRE-0094. In January 2004, King announced the completion of initial dosing in a Phase I trial with MRE-0094. The Phase II clinical trial program is anticipated to commence in the first half of 2005.
